Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is developed, featuring a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
