Bluefin Fish Sells for Record Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital Auction
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the year.
The successful bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs restaurants across the country and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the company president, a familiar bidder at the yearly first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is renowned for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new purchase exceeds his own notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its locations throughout the country.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments immediately after the auction concluded.
"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied diner.
