A Mountain of Japanese Animation News Arrived Over the Festive Season

The Christmas holidays provide a wealth of pursuits much better than scanning the headlines: opening presents, feasting on holiday treats, and harnessing patience techniques to avoid arguing with family members. It is wished you were able to accomplish all these things and more. Nevertheless, the entertainment world never sleeps, and this is notably true for the realm of anime. Many exciting announcements surfaced over the festive period, and just in case you missed any, here is a compilation of the biggest bits.

One-Punch Man Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (In 2027)

Truly the most surprising revelation, the notorious troubled production that was season 3 of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to deter more episodes. Season 3 will return with a subsequent part in 2027—so far away they might as well have labeled it season 4. Adding to the surprise, animation studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is attached to direct from the beginning, which is seen as a good sign. But, the key visual for the continuation is identical to the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This suggests that, at this point, they must be mocking the fans.

The Ruri Dragon Series Is Set to Be the First Shonen Jump Anime Produced By Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has built a name for being an top-tier animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the superb artistry of its work but for the ethical practices of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Unexpectedly, until now, it had never worked on an anime based on a manga published in Shonen Jump, perhaps the most iconic magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will change that, and what a excellent choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo became widespread acclaim when it first appeared in 2022 after just a few chapters, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the creator's health issues. When it resumed publication with a more relaxed pace, the series proved it still retained the fans' affection and enthusiasm, and now everyone is overjoyed about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.

Kingdom Its Sixth Season Has a Sequel In Production

Kingdom is the best-selling, long-running Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only just received an English translation, but the anime has been going on for some time, and its sixth season was yet another outstanding entry. Apparently that was just the initial batch, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in development, and it will probably premiere in 2026.

Science Saru Is Bringing A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series

Another studio known for the excellent quality of its work, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be taking on the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the true story of Fatima, an influential woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime titled Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a truly original and captivating visual style, which evokes Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my watchlist.

The Tougen Anki Series Will Continue With a Season Two

Shortly after the airing of the final episode of the first season, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be receiving a sequel. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The new season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete premiere date has not yet been announced.
